Even under the best of circumstances, meeting children’s needs after parents have separated and/or divorced can be extremely challenging. And there are times when professional guidance and support can make a critical difference as parents try to do the best for their children. Both mediation and co-parenting counseling are venues in which parents work to resolve conflicts and come to agreements on how to raise children collaboratively. Dr. Kaufman is also able to assist parents to craft detailed parenting plans that are suited to their unique situations and the specific needs of their children. Key to the process is establishing a respectful and safe forum for parents to share ideas, feelings and approaches to parenting. In this venue, Dr. Kaufman is able to draw on both his clinical skills as well as his knowledge regarding what optimizes children’s adjustment post-separation.
Though mediation and co-parent counseling are private and confidential processes, there are times when Dr. Kaufman will accept court appointments to resolve parents’ disputes. In all such venues, Dr. Kaufman supports parent’s abilities to make sound informed decisions about their children.
